Radical Agenda EP089 – A Right Delayed

If you do some research on concealed carry pistols, there exists no shortage of diversity in terms of opinions. Reliability, magazine capacity, power, concealability, comfort, accuracy, price, and other factors all weigh against one another making a decision on “the perfect gun” pretty much impossible.

For my first handgun, I bought a Taurus .38 Special revolver. A fine combination of small size, power, and price, or so I thought. When I was compelled to draw the weapon last year, I found myself facing four assailants, with only 5 bullets in a weapon that was not exactly known for its accuracy. Luckily I didn’t have to shoot, but if I did, it would not have been a pretty scene.

What if my assailants also had guns? What if they didn’t stop when I drew the weapon? What if the police hadn’t shown up?

So I bought a Glock 17 9mm. A more accurate weapon with greater capacity. Sure I sacrificed a little bit of power, sure I paid a little more for it, and sure the weapon is gigantic in comparison to my snubby, but round placement trumps power, I had a few bucks to spend, and I open carry anyway.

But I’m not always in New Hampshire, and open carry isn’t always appropriate. I despise the feeling of a gun in my waistband, especially when it has the thickness and cold steel of a revolver. I thusly decided I needed a pocket gun, and after doing a bit of research, I saw good things being said about the Kel Tec P3AT. The .380 ACP semi-automatic pistol is tiny, lightweight, and at $259 from my local gun dealer, the price was right.

So I filled out the tyrannical federal form as I’ve done several times before. Confirmed the information was correct, handed it over to the shop keeper, and after an hour of standing around, I was informed my purchase had been “delayed”.

That’s interesting. I seem to recall some folks at Obama’s recent town hall on gun control saying that guns were easier to buy than books and computers. I’ve never had to go through a background check, much less get delayed, when buying books or computers.

I should here note that I am not a convicted felon, I have not renounced my US citizenship, I have no convictions for domestic violence, I am subject to no restraining orders, I am not a fugitive from justice, I have never been convicted of a violent crime, and by the way I was carrying two loaded firearms at the time of my application, because I have a concealed carry permit in the state of New Hampshire where the purchase was being made. What they think I’m going to do with a pocket .380 that I can’t do with my 9mm, AK, shotgun, and .38, remains a mystery.

You might consider this to be a fluke, but I went through the same ordeal a few weeks ago when I bought a shotgun at Dick’s Sporting Goods. The background check was delayed, and two days later I was approved. So whatever they thought was worthy of delaying me, had surely already been cleared up. The only conclusion I can come to, is that this is intentional harassment.

But hey, I’m sure once they pass a few more “common sense gun safety laws” all this will be cleared up. Although, that doesn’t explain the 125 people shot in anti-gun Chicago in the first 11 days of this year.

In other news, it seems like the people of Cologne, Germany took my advice seriously. Applications for weapons permits have skyrocketed since New Year’s Eve when hundreds of sexual assaults were reported to have been committed by invaders.

The stock market is off to its worst yearly start in history, and the DJIA is down by almost 500 on the day. “Low” oil prices are to blame, as if the world forgot the times when you didn’t have to mortgage your home to drive to work.
