Donald Trump addressed a joint session of Congress last night. In a mostly conciliatory tone, helped along in part by his leftist daughter Ivanka’s influence, he outlined his agenda. He came off as presidential, controlled, a unifying force in a nation deeply divided.
Sadly, it served no benefit whatsoever. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said “The speech and reality have never been more detached”. Former Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear basically ignored the entire speech and hinged the Democratic party’s future on bashing the President’s cabinet. “You picked a Cabinet of billionaires and Wall Street insiders,” Beshear said, sitting in the Lexington Diner in Lexington, Kentucky. “That’s not being our champion. That’s being Wall Street’s champion.”
In the crowd, Nancy Pelosi, Keith Ellison, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders and other notable Democrats all appeared as if Trump had just announced the formation of a Chilean Helicopter Brigade. Predictably, despite condemning anti-Jewish threats and promising to help “inner cities” he was called a racist by liberals in the media.
Now, perhaps one could make the case that such efforts to reach across the aisle are necessary. One might even say that when such efforts are rejected by the opposition party, they do us a favor in the long term, helping us in pointing out their hypocrisy. There is certainly some degree of merit to this line of thinking, and from experience I can say that perpetual abrasiveness has costs associated with it.
On the other hand, anyone who has paid even the slightest bit of attention must have found the leftist response to this conciliatory effort to be wholly predictable. The Democrat party is not interested in unity, or the success of the country, or the wellbeing of Americans. They only care about advancing their own interests, which from every measure I’ve been able to note, is to destroy Western Civilization. If Donald Trump announced that his plan for replacing Obamacare was a single payer, Medicare for all program, straight out of the Bernie Sanders playbook, he would be accused of trying to deny healthcare choices to black Americans. If he announced that he was bringing home all US troops, he would be accused of trying to destroy Israel. If he handed the entire Health and Human Services department over to Planned Parenthood, he would be accused of trying to oppress women in some frivolous dot connecting exercise.
So while I sincerely hope smarter people than I have a greater plan for the President, I’m left rather dissatisfied with last night’s performance. Every effort to calm or make peace with the left is a wasted opportunity to further demoralize and attack them. Even when they agree with us, they’ll simply deny that they do and call us racists because they know that reason and evidence are not what ultimately determines political success. Their media propagandists will continue to lie and smear, and their criminal elements will continue to vandalize, assault, loot, and burn.
If we’re not prepared to fight this battle on those terms, then we’re going to lose, and this brief opportunity to save our nation will have been squandered.
